Umm, yea… Talking about the one and only SEX.COM. The domain sold for something like $12 to $14 million as was reported in January of 2006 by DNJournal… It was funny to see SEX.NET sell only a couple of month’s later for a fraction of what SEX.COM sold for… It went for only $454,000 during a live auction held at a domain conference put on by Rick Schwartz in Las Vegas.

Gary Kremen of Grant Media sold both SEX.COM and SEX.NET in 2006 and moved onto other ventures. Things were really booming in the domain industry in 2006 and 2007…. The golden days. Lots of big deals were being put together both privately and publicly. This one 14 million dollar deal got lots of heads turning without a doubt.

I always thought that the partners who formed “Escom LLC” specifically to acquire SEX.COM under a joint venture type of deal overpaid big time and now it’s clear 100% that they did.  I am sure they had great plans and all, but here we are 4 years later and they got nowhere. A huge miscalculation and failure on their part.

Only burned through tons of cash and wasted a whole lot of time / resources. What a shame.. Definitely not the first time or last time that something like this will happen. Take for example Men.com which sold for $1.3m… What is it now? A banner farm. That is what happens with generic domains. They aren’t always all that great.

The partners / owners of SEX.COM are 1 year late on monthly payments due (domain purchase was financed) so it was announced just last month that this domain is going to be auctioned off as it was foreclosed by Domain Capital. Even though the domain gets around 40,000 – 50,000 unique visitors per day… The current owners see no value in them. They stopped believing in this domain

If you visit the current site, SEX.COM,  you will see why it is losing money and is hopeless. It just doesn’t have much going for it. So what that it’s possibly a category leading domain. So what that it has a ton of visitors… That doesn’t mean much! The problem that this domain has is that it’s too damn generic. HUGE PROBLEM!

If the domain is too generic, it’s very challenging trying to tie it up to a certain topic and develop it out right…. So what exactly can you tie up SEX.COM with??! Good question, eh! Something that nobody during the past 4 years was able to figure out. Also most of the traffic that this domain gets are unintentional type-ins from all of the sites that end in *sex.com which there are over 40,000.

People are looking for whateverSEX.com in the back of their mind but end up going to just SEX.COM . This happens quite a lot too, trust me on this… I’ve managed some very similar high trafficked generic gTLD and ccTLD domains for various clients as part of the Maxxximize.com domain monetization services we provide and this misdirected traffic isn’t all that great. Very hard to convert it. Sometimes it is absolutely worthless. That is right… I said it, WORTHLESS!

This is a cool domain, without a doubt… Worth a few million dollars, but not $14 million. It can do a lot for a company that will put it to good use and think long term because development always is. It’s a good investment and whoever acquires it next, they will be put on the map instantly. All of the free press will give them instant recognition and all of the credibility in the world to succeed in whatever it is they do… Whether they provide some kind of a service or sell products.

So with that said, probably somebody who isn’t all that well known right now in the SEX business (adult industry) will gather up all of their resources, maybe even partner up and try their luck by putting in a multi-million dollar bid during the foreclosure auction set to happen in NYC less than 10 days from today.

I see some people throwing around unrealistic figures, that it will sell for some $10m, $15m or maybe even $25m… LOL! That is highly unlikely to happen. This domain names’ value pretty much has decreased year-over-year by 10% – 20% at minimum. The adult business has also changed big time since 2006 so this domain isn’t all that great as far as running a standalone business goes. The only ones who made a killing with it were the previous owners in the early days, from 1995 to 2006.

Everybody who had anything to do with it the past four years have gotten nothing but headaches and that is because nothing good lasts forever.. YEP SEX.COM had a great run for exactly 10 years but that’s about it. Whoever pony’s up the cash next will have to be very creative in how they put this domain to use in order to turn in a profit at the end of the day. I can only think of a couple of business models that can possibly work; directory of sex sites, tube style, live sex cams portal or classifieds / personals mega site.

Frank Schilling of NameAdministration.com and the guys over at BuyDomains.com (NameMedia) definitely know their stuff when it comes to domain investment… So it’s really no coincidence that between the two they have collected 200,000+ of some of the best .net keyword domains.

They both know very well that even .net’s are quite valuable and furthermore, by having the .net version of their .com domain names it increases the value of their domains’ exponentially. Pairs of domains are always highly desired by competitive webmasters and internet marketers. Having com/net/org is even better

BuyDomains.com, one of the largest domain portfolio holders in the world currently has close to 150,000 .net domains and 40,000 .org domains. They also have 15,000 .info domains, and about 20,000 total combined of .biz, .us and .mobi domains but it’s clear that their top picks are COM, NET and ORG.

No doubt .com is king, always was and always will be, but .net is the next best thing. That is the bottom line! Guys like Frank Schilling knew this and have been snapping up the best .net keyword domains for a long time. Same thing really for BuyDomains.com, Kevin Ham, etc. They know the deal.

BuyDomains.com sells like $500,000 worth of domains week in and week out, and many of them are .net as well as .org’s. It was also nice to see Frank Schilling report some of his sales last week which were always kept private. FuneralHome.net went for $30,000! Not bad, right?

So those of you who cannot get any decent dot com’s… Listen up, all is not lost. There are still plenty of the “next best thing” and they are available right under your noses by the hundreds and thousands. They are .net’s and .org’s. These two gTLD’s are the 2nd and 3rd most popular extensions in the world after dot com the almighy.

No seriously… “Where are all the good .COM domains, eh?” That is a question which I get asked the most often by people. Here at DomainStryker.com we process literally millions of expiring domains that are going to be auctioned off but there aren’t that many great dot com’s included in our lists. Why?!? Why oh why…?????!?

Relax, there is no conspiracy.. The answer is real simple. There aren’t that many valuable .com keyword domains that are being auctioned off or released by domain registrars nowadays. There are plenty that are suppose to expire because the original owners do not renew them, but they never actually get to the auction stage.

The registrars have become domainers themselves in recent years as the domain industry has exploded in popularity and attracted VC funding and outsiders… Things have gotten very complicated thanks to them but it’s really no surprise and was to be expected. These money hungry companies are building up their own portfolios by basically cherry picking whatever they like from inventories of millions of domains.

So what happens is that companies such as eNom.com, Tucows.com, Register.com, etc actually keep the best domains that expire for themselves, and of course those happen to be dot com’s. A company such as eNom even runs it’s own “premium domain name brokerage” website over at AcquireThisName.com where they sell the domains for thousands and tens of thousands of dollars in profit. How about that?  Been going on for a couple of years now too.

Yep, I know what you are thinking… This totally sucks! But what else is new? They aren’t really breaking any rules or doing anything illegal. It’s all by the book. Their just doing whatever they can to turn in a profit at the end because they got businesses to run and investors to please.

Those who follow the expiring domains aftermarket since the early days know that things have been changing quite a bit since 2007. It’s never really been fair though either since the establishment of an aftermarket. There has always been loopholes, numerous “transparency” issues and people exploiting the system however they can and for as long as they can.

This business of buying domains and selling domains is definitely not for everyone. You have to be pretty creative or shall I say “clever” because there are many challenges to overcome if you are to become truly successful and master the art of domaining… But you know what they say, where there are huge risks there are even bigger rewards. Once you figure it all out, it doesn’t seem so bad and the money…. Mmmm Lets just say it more than makes up for all the headaches involved!

Hmm.. Apparently the following three domains were purchased in late 2008 by a well known domain investor at auction for the following amounts: Date.me for $70,000, Marry.me for $12,000 and Meet.me for $5,890.

The economic depressions and all of the financial crisis to the side, somebody who drops close to $90k on three .me domains must be pretty confident with such an “investment” and clearly know what he is doing… Right. You would think?

I must be missing something here because to me none of the prices paid for the domains above make too much sense. I mean, marry.me for $12k??! Date.me for $70k??! Wow.. WOW!! The only one that I can see an actual standalone business behind is Meet.me. That’s it! The other two aren’t category killers or too special.

In my opinion, the prices paid for the domains were premium’s even over the end-user price that any one of these could ever fetch. I get it that they are catchy, brandable and unique but come on… $70k for Date.me ?! It’s hard to justify that price even for some of the best .ME domains and this one isn’t even one of the top 10.

I am not too crazy about all kinds of clever and made-up domain hack’s and sound good types of web 2.0 domains to begin with… Ok ok… Some of them do have their place and can be useful without a doubt but once again, dropping a huge sum on a domain such as Date.me makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I am puzzled. Really… But what probably happened in this case was; the investor got a little too excited / attached to these domains. He developed strong feelings for them. It happens sometimes where you overpay by a lot, but what can I say… Won’t be the first or last to do so in the domain biz. Live and learn.

There are keyword domains with certain prefixes and suffixes that are extremely valuable in .com and even the .net / .org alternate extensions… Always have been and always will be. Some examples are BestInternetBrowser.com, SteamCleanerReviews.com, CheapMonitors.net, BestRouters.net, TelemedicineServices.com, HomeGeneratorReviews.com,  etc.

The above few domain examples are ones I’ve picked up recently. Some have already been developed, while some will be re-sold. So with that said, here are some  popular suffixes and prefixes for e-commerce types of stores which I like and recommend you to stay on the look out for:

Suffixes… Domains ending in: Store, Shop, Warehouse, Online,  Outlet, Gear, Supply, Supplies, Equipment, Reviews, etc.

Prefixes….. Domains starting with: Best, Buy, Cheap, Discount, Online, Top, etc.

There are some others for informational types of sites / general resources. You could use a suffix such as guide, online, reviews, news, etc. Those are basically the two dozen or so most common suffixes and prefixes which are used on e-commerce sites as well as regular informational sites.

After dot com domains, the next best thing is either .net and .org usually. It really depends on the topic though. Sometimes a dot org will beat dot net and the other way around. I like these gTLD’s a lot and they have quite a bit of value if the domain has the right keywords present. I usually value strong .net/.org domains at 10x – 15x less of what the dot com name is worth.

So for example if keyword.com sold for $10k then the keyword.net domain is worth around $500 – $1000 easily. Same thing for keyword.org which would be valued at 10x to 15x of what the keyword.com domain may be worth or already sold for.

Below is a few dozen domains which I’ve “flipped” the past few month’s for a quick and easy profit. All of them were acquired within the past few month’s and re-sold for an average 10x ROI. Some domains were purchased at GoDaddy for $25, while others at SnapNames for $60 or at NameJet for $70 – $100 maximum. I don’t usually get into bidding wars, so really most of the domains were either sniped or I was the only bidder and was lucky enough to get them cheap, basically below market value.

Some of the domains above were sold for a few hundred bucks, while some for a few thousand but the average price for each domain sold is right around $500. A handful I simply got rid of for $100 or $200 but you get the point… Collectively, it is a nice sum and consistently a 10x ROI which I shoot for in every deal I make.

As you can see, most of the domains consist of 1 or 2 keywords and they are relevant one to another. The domains have a clear purpose and can easily be tied up to a certain topic. This makes the development of the domain easy. Search engines favor this types of domains, as do visitors. So that is basically what makes them valuable and good investments, be it for a few hundred bucks or a few thousand.

During the good ol’ days right around 2004 and 2005 it used to be more like 30x – 50x ROI on domain flips on average, and sometimes even 100x with domains that had traffic but times have changed big time in the domain business. The inventory isn’t as good as it once was but still there are plenty of opportunities to be had even today, in 2010 and beyond for those who are in the game day in and day out!

You gotta keep your eyes wide open, do the right research and pull the trigger when it’s time. Gotta be in it to win it, daily. Consistency is the key. Good luck!
