New details have surfaced about Yun Ye, the mysterious $164 million man…

To those of you who the name doesn’t ring a bell; Yun Ye, aka. “Ult Search” had one of the largest and best domain collections and mass developed minisites from the late 90’s which were sold for 9 figures in 2005 to Marchex. Many domainers don’t even know how or why the man collected so many domains, but we’ve got all of the insights and answers at last!

Yun Ye’s domain portfolio at it’s peak had hundreds of thousands of valuable keyword domains which were primarily managed under an offshore company called Name Development Ltd as well as at least 8 – 10 other international companies based in the Middle East and Africa.

Many people have wondered how a Chinese man’s company who lives in California ends up in the Caribbean and that is a very good question. Originally, Ye purchased a California incorporation kit off of eBay in the early 90’s for $17.95 which came with a free expert consultation.

After all said and done, the business somehow managed to be officially set up in the Caribbean instead of California thanks to the assistance of a 15/16 year old Internet Guru from Mumbai who went by the nickname “RaJuXv2pAC4LyFe”.

Raju’s specialties on his Geocities.com hosted resume page included translation services in 13 languages, copywriting, e-mail cracking, AOL phishing, netscape browser programming, music composition, accounting, legal incorporation in 183 countries, graphic design, search engine spamming and traffic deoptimisation.

Yun Ye was very impressed with the young man’s skills and the low price of $17.95 for a complete incorporation service was a great deal to be had so he pulled the trigger. It later turned out that being based offshore had a lot of advantages and was great for business. All thanks to Raju! Other clients of Raju included many Wall Street financiers, most notably B-Mad, aka Bernie Madoff who is now known as MadOffx69Bi.

Yun Ye together with his wife Jin Lu whom he met on an internet dating IRC channel #bored, worked on an advanced web page publishing system for almost 5 month’s non-stop which had the capabilities of mass developing approximately 100 – 130 minisites per day filled with banners or contextual advertisements and custom graphic headers.

Veteran Chinese domainers such as King Kung, Tic Tak To and Pu Poo who intermingled with Yun Ye aka the Godfather of minisites on a daily basis during the late 90’s described him as a very passionate man when it came to mass developing and collecting domain names but unfortunately he had many demons to battle with along the way.

In an exclusive interview, one of Yun Ye’s best friends and former ping pong partner, Fak Yu, told us “What most people don’t know about Mr. Ye is that he had a very bad case of adult ADHD… So he would start developing a domain and then as soon as the web page was fully uploaded to the FTP server he would have already changed his mind and start working on the next minisite, and the next batch of domain registrations and so on.”

From an unnamed source, we learned that on one Saturday morning in early 2000, Yun Ye launched at least 200 minisites, which was a personal goal of his and a life long dream. It was a remarkable achievement and a world record at that time apparently. Yun Ye was featured in multiple online publications such as the Id Circle, DomainZ Wire, H4x Digital, TechRaunch, and Geeks-R-us [UK version] just to name a few.

Unfortunately all of this minisite development and domain registrations from over the years took it’s toll on him. The man’s development efforts had developed him a bad case of carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Within days, both of his arms were numb and almost paralyzed. Yun Ye couldn’t register or develop domains anymore! The man was depressed and heartbroken.

Yun Ye’s wife immediately threw together some code and setup a bot to auto-post every 2 minutes “SPECIALIST HAND’ DOCTOR WANTED” in the Yahoo.com and AOL regional California chatrooms.

Within 15 minutes of doing so, she was IM’d by a Kevin Ham, who convinced her to buy a listing in his website’s classifieds section of HostGlobal.com which cost approximately $5,000 per day. The normal pricing was only $30 per month, but this month Kevin Ham was running a special promotion for new clients and in his own words “IT’S WORTH EVERY CENT” as 12% of the proceeds were donated to an unnamed Christian charity.

This not so popular web hosting directory and forum was run by the man who we all know as “the man who owns the internet” but back then he was only a medical student by night and webmaster up-and-comer by day. Yun Ye’s wife quickly became good friends with the Ham, after spending hundreds of hours chatting about domains, explaining how you can make money with them via PPC. Kevin found the entire concept fascinating and was drawn to her more and more.

Fast forward a few month’s later and millions of dollars paid for the classifieds listing which didn’t seem to be working, Yun Ye’s wife stopped paying. She had lost her hope. Kevin Ham was furious when he didn’t see his daily wire transfer come in from the Name Development company. He chartered a private jet that same day and went looking for them in the Caribbean but he didn’t find anything.

Kevin returned home and went right back to work. He logged into the yahoo chatrooms only to find the same messages being scrolled once again “SPECIALIST HAND’ DOCTOR WANTED”. He wanted to win over their business desperately, so he spent the whole night reading medical e-books about the various conditions which were effecting Yun Ye’s hands.

For the next few month’s Kevin Ham lived with Yun Ye and Jin Lu in a studio apartment. He quit medical school and instead worked on his masters degree in domaining directly from Yun Ye during the day and Jin Lu during the night, two of the most successful domain collectors and minisite developers at that time.

Right now we are still trying to translate the rest of the archived communications and interviews that were sent to us by a man who calls himself X.

As you can imagine, translating text from Chinese to English is a lot of work. It took us almost 25 minutes to translate what we have shared with you above. If you speak Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or really any other Asian language… We could really use your help right about now.

We want to make sure we get everything right. It’s critical!! So please get in touch with us ASAP… Oh and 快樂愚人節 to our friends in China and mates in Australia too… Cheers!! ;)

GoDaddy.. A force to be reckoned with!!

On any given day, GoDaddy.com auctions off and sells more of it’s expired domains than SnapNames and NameJet combined. Why is that though?

Firstly, GoDaddy’s prices are much less than it’s competitors as it only costs about $20  – $25 to acquire a good .com/.net/.org domain if you can manage to avoid a bidding frenzy whereas SnapNames charges around $60 – $99 minimum and NameJet is at $69 right now. The prices are much more attractive and this is what makes GoDaddy.com so successful.

Secondly, all of the GoDaddy domain auctions display the visitors that an expired domain is receiving. It’s kind of hard to verify this stuff, so you shouldn’t always assume the traffic is type ins or from what we call backlinks / search rankings but it’s good to know “Estimated Monthly Web Site Traffic” which is readily available for each and every expired domain name auction.

They even have a “search engine ranking report” displayed on every auction. It displays the domain’s Google pagerank, Alexa ranking, incoming links from Google and Yahoo as well as search saturation. So basically GoDaddy is really trying to get the domain sold by providing as much relevant data as possible, which is very nice of them and definitely helps close a lot of deals if you know what I mean.

If SnapNames and NameJet displayed traffic stats as well as some other metrics, they too would get a lot more action. I’ve always wondered, why the hell don’t they do it? It makes sense, doesn’t it… ? Of course it does but we already know the exact reasons as to why they don’t.

This lack of transparency is nothing new and it’s been plaguing the domain industry since the early days. This small things can make all of the difference in the world. It can increase user and bidding activity exponentially which will increase the revenues.

GoDaddy isn’t your typical “domainer” operation, so they do things a bit different. Ok, a lot different actually!! So to the smart guys over at SnapNames and NameJet, why don’t you pay attention. It’s time for a change…  Look at GoDaddy, they have a proven and winning formula. You don’t have to straight out copy it but just take bits and pieces. It will do wonders, what do you think?? ;)

Autographed.net sells at eBay auction..

The domain Autographed.net was originally purchased in December of 2009 for $1,750 via Afternic.com. It’s interesting because the new owner tried to setup a website on the domain but really that went nowhere fast. So he decided to flip it, by listing it for sale on DNForum.com exactly a month ago.

First time around, he was seeking offers and had a buy-it-now price of $3,000. That price didn’t get much action so he quickly lowered it to $2,100.That price still didn’t get the domain sold so additional cuts needed to be made.

So he went on to drastically reduce the price and even be willing to take a loss. The domain was priced at $900, then $800 and at last even for as low as $650. Still nothing. ..Nobody was biting. The domain was never sold. No buyers found at the reasonable price of $650!

I put in an offer to this guy exactly one month ago in private and told him I’ll give him $500 for Autographed.net. He wanted more. I could of upped my offer to $600 or 700 easily, or claim it at the reduced buy-it-now price of $650 which I did notice but at the end of the day.. I am hunting for bargains!

The five day eBay auction for Autographed.net just closed and the domain sold for $1,475. There was a total of 4 bidders who placed bids for more than $650 and three of the bidders went as high as $1,000. There wasn’t a bidding frenzy towards the end, but there was enough interest as you can see. It’s great having multiple back-up buyers, just in case something goes wrong.

Personally, I really do not like spending more than a few hundred bucks on a domain, no matter how great it is, unless it is in one of the specialty niches. I try to limit myself at $500. For $650 I could buy 10 or 15 great domains easily and my strategy has always been playing it lottery style. I want lots of domains and I want them cheap :)

The more domains you have, the better your chances are at scoring a lot more winners at the end of the day. This strategy has been utilized by me exclusively since 2003 and has worked lovely as part of the on-going mass development projects we launch daily and domain sales we are able to close here and there, both with resellers and end-users.

Is the domain worth more than $650 or $1,750? Yes. It can probably go for  a few thousand bucks, even on the reseller market as it has massive development potential and an actual standalone business can be setup on it later on but as you can see… Not even the best of the best domains can be sold on one of the most popular domain forum’s in the world.

What’s the lesson to be learned as a seller? You have to shop your domains around at multiple venues. Those who keep on trying and don’t give up will succeed. It’s difficult to sell a good domain for a good price within a day or a week.

You have to market it to the right audience and go at it until you get that magic number that you are happy with. There are still no guarantees at the end of the day that the domain will be sold even for one dollar, but you get what I am saying… Try to think outside the box, be creative, and keep putting it out there. It’s worth it at the end.

What’s the lesson to be learned as a buyer here? If you want to score a good deal, one after another and another you have to also look at as many places as you like. There are tons of domains for sale flooding the aftermarket daily. There isn’t a central listing system, so you have to put in the hard work. Browse around the most popular sites, day in an day out. It’s all about consistency.

My strategy is simple and straightforward when it comes domain acqusitions. I try to get the best of both world’s as far as getting quality domains cheap and in large quantities which is why I limit purchases at $500/domain.

It is impossible to do it on a mass scale x1000s of domains per week because the inventory isn’t there but slowly and surely the portfolio grows nice. The domains I pick up and which you too can pick up as well are up there for grabs.. You just have to look closely. All about research!

Don’t hesitate to wait out on some domains and get them at a reduced cost though because the market always sets the real price. If the demand isn’t there, prices get slashed. Value just isn’t there… Simple! Also don’t hesitate to put in your best offers and get a dialogue going with the seller.

You got nothing to lose and everything to gain really…  So have a simple business plan and a few rules to follow and you will do just fine when it comes to domaining. The business of buying domains and flipping domains is fun from whichever angle you look at it. The more you try, the more you succeed… Makes sense, right? ;)

Domain Madness 2 Auction

Mike Fiol and Adam Strong of DomainConsultant.com organized and auctioned off approximately 76 domains of which quite a few sold. The big news was CamRoulette.com, a hand registered domain selling for six figures. Nice flip!

Craig Snyder registered the domain on December 12, 2009… Almost one full month in advance before the term “cam roulette” started getting any searches or action as can be seen by the Google Trends.

According to whois records, Adam Strong acquired this domain from the original owner approximately one month ago. The price paid for it was $x,xxx, only a fraction of the staggering amount two determined bidders pushed this domain to close at after many extensions and going into overtime.

It was advertised that this domain is currently getting around 700 visitors per day on average and making $10 – $15 parked. Obviously the type-in traffic will continue to increase for a while, but the big question is… Was it a good buy at $151,000?

A bit too much if you ask me, but I think I already know who got it… Not too many will risk so much on this types of domains. Probably the same fella who not so long ago purchased Webcam.com for $1,000,000 and owns one of the best adult portfolio’s in the world. We’ll see if I was right when the WHOIS updates once again.

Below are the complete results:

CamRoulette.com         $151,000

SecurityGuards.com     $20,000

PalmSpringsHomes.com   $14,000

PokerCaddy.com           $5,000

VideoRoulette.com       $5,000

FootballUniforms.com   $2,500

TaxTool.com                 $1500

RacingStats.com           $1,100

Blogging… It ain’t easy ;) Part 1

Whoever said it was easy… SERIOUSLY? But you know, somebody’s gotta do it… Ok, well… A lot do try it and fail. Miserably. Nobody likes to admit it, but it happens all the damn time. So what if you are a domain superstar and well known veteran rock star with all of the credentials in the world? That doesn’t mean much really.

Blogging ain’t so simple or easy to get right nowadays. Those who’ve done it know all about it at the end after all said and done. Those who never have, well.. You got the wrong perception of this whole thing until you get down and to it. It’s not all fun and games as it may seem… It’s everything you expect it to be, sure, but only in reverse. That is why the success ratio is at best 5  percent.

Paul Sloan and David Carter teamed up on a new venture called Playing The Angles — there was a lot of hype building up the launch of this site and all, but as you can see… Only one or two interesting posts were ever published, with the last one coming on October of 2009. Highly unlikely that it will have a comeback… Those guys are just too all over the place. Never even had the chance. I knew it all along.

Mike “Zappy” Zapolin tried to get something going over at InternetWarrior.com but unfortunately it went nowhere. After a while, it just gets to a  point where something’s gotta give. Nobody was commenting on the articles because probably nobody was even reading the blog in the first place, so that’s that. Nothing since December of 2009… The whole “internet warrior” system most likely flopped as well. It’s too bad, but it is what it is. You win some, lose some.. Warriah!

Dan Warner setup a blog at DanWarner.com in July of 2009 but it never really materialized… Literally. The announcement of a blog generated some buzz and domainers were glad to see Dan continue to  stay actively involved in the industry after quitting his job but here we are, almost one year later and there was never any updates or posts. Just that one introductory post… Don’t hold your breathe fellas, eh! Or maybe there will be an update, at the one year anniversary… Mm! Can’t wait..

Jeff Bennett of NameMedia occasionally blogs at JeffBennett.com but it’s been a major failure overall because nobody from the domaining industry ever interacts with the blog… Probably because nobody knows about it…. DUH! It’s partly Jeff’s fault because he doesn’t blog much about domain issues. He should do it more often, but hey.. The man know’s what he’s doing. Blogs are great for just rambling, right… Ummm… NO. Maybe one day he will put it to good use though. I have faith in him… What about you?

Mike Fiol is an interesting fella who started blogging in December of 2009 at Headcase.com… If only he would put the same amount of energy into exposing and addressing some of the real issues in the industry, the blog would be a huge hit. There is plenty of crazy shit going on in the domaining business, so why not go at it… Let lose fella, go ahead. It’s good. I promise to read each and every one of your posts… So there you have it, your first dedicated visitor.. 100% committed ;)

Richard Douglas is a domainer with a tech background who blogged for a while at  TooManySecrets.com but then slowly but surely it all came to an end… Usually there is more and more time between the frequency of posts, then the posts get shorter / repetitive… Then they stop period. Just one day out of nowhere disappears. Happens to a lot of blogs, not just Richard’s. All those promised case study’s and series’s never came to be… I feel so bad for the domainers who desperately awaited them. No worries little fella, you survived without them. You are fine.

Julia Mackenzie was probably the one and only female domainer that ever blogged about some real issues at IsItMeOrIsEveryoneElseStupid.com and we lost her… Probably got bored of it all. Ahh man! It’s too bad because she was actually bringing up real issues into the open and had more balls than 98% of the domainer bloggers out there. Now, isn’t that sad? Most domain industry bloggers try to be politically correct and wanna have it both ways… Why not, right? That’s that newbie mentality… SHEEP.

Reece Berg had a good run over at LLLL.com but it didn’t last because, well, those llll names are for domain rookies and obsessed domainer junkies… He turned to blog about a whole lot of other random crap at the end, from tech to religion to god knows what… Refusing to accept any ads and keeping it cleaning for whatever reason, it wasn’t worth the time spent blogging at the end of the day so the blog just disappeared. Funny to see it now plastered with ads all over the place… HA! He must be getting rich now from all those adsense ads.

Rob Monster blogged for a bit at Epik.com in order to promote his new network or whatever you wanna call it but things have been very slow last few month’s with only a handful of updates. Usually when the blog posts stop coming is when the entire operation is going down down. It’s too bad… But it’s not the first time or last time this well happen. Not everybody’s blog or business is meant to be a huge success. Survival of the fittest baby.. You know what that means, right?

Kevin Jackson is a very ambitious and interesting guy from the UK who blogged over at eBusinessDomains.com but we don’t see much of him anymore. Last posts were made in November and December of 2009… Things just got old obviously. That is when they all quietly disappear, moving onto a new project or business venture. When you can’t gain any momentum, after all that hard work you put into it day after day after day… blogging can get stressful and a total bitch. Nobody likes to call it quits but you have to. Enough is enough.

Dominik Mueller blogged from 2003/2004 til’ 2009 over at DMueller.com about everything and anything domaining related. He didn’t have a strong finish or anything. He didn’t get a standing ovation when it was all over with. He just disappeared one day… POOF! No more posts. No more blogging. Unfortunately that is what happens to all of the bloggers, the good and bad. Nobody cares too much because there are 100 other similar blogs. That is why you have to bring a unique perspective and separate yourself from everybody else. If you don’t, you are destined to fail and you will be forgotten in a matter of days. Who… What??! Don’t remember.

Joel Ohman is a smart SEO / marketer who blogged for a while at DomainSuperstar.com in order to promote his domain tools but after a while the posts just stop coming. Only a few in the past 6 month’s, which is once again very typical and a sign of how things unwind for the worse. When things aren’t good… The posts and updates aren’t there. Nothing to report. It’s not hibernation.. NO. It’s game over. Nobody really comes back to the blogging world with a vengeance. If things don’t work out the first time around, you learn that it was simply not meant to be. Gotta pack your bags and move onto something else.

There are literally hundreds of other people’s blogs who you never even heard of who failed / disappeared recently… But you get the point. The dozen blogs above were just an example which I wanted to illustrate and comment on individually.

Nothing is easy on the web because competition is fierce. In part 2 I will try to address some of the issues that exist in the domaining blogosphere and offer some advice to those who are currently struggling or wanting to get into the game.

When I blogged consistently over at WannaDevelop.com I did over $100,000 in sales each and every month for almost a year by converting a majority of those visitors into paying clients but it was never easy… It required a lot of work. A lot of planning and the right execution.

I stopped blogging at WannaDevelop.com at the pace that I used to because I penetrated the entire market and my penetration or reach had reached it’s limits. A blog is just another vehicle to get your message across and furthermore interact with the users who can be potential clients.

If you know what you are talking about, and present the right offers… You can make a lot of money. There is only a few bloggers who have been successful over the years who have managed to pull in 6 or more figures per year from their operation. A tiny percentage of the entire domainer blogging army which has exploded in the last year.

PS — no disrespect meant whatsoever to those bloggers mentioned above. Not my fault really that things didn’t work out. It’s just my personal opinions and views and if you don’t like it, well… Go blog about it you pussy :P
